![]() This was his 1st deer hunting rifle as a young man that he used to deer hunt with for several years, until he was able to afford a better rifle, the sporterized 1917 30-06. It was a military surplus rifle still covered in cosmoline when he got it. He bought the G43 brand new immediately after the war. A sporterized 1917 30-06, and a G43 8mm Mauser. These are my 2 favorite guns left to me by my Grandfather. 32-20 my FIL has that was made in 1898 (Pretty sure it's a Winchester Model 1892, I looked at it once several years back - all original and still in great shape for it's age). Lots of others, but those three are probably the cream of the crop in terms of sentimental/family history. Lord only knows how much game that little. ![]() ![]() 22 auto - but it was the family truck gun way back in the day. Still a great shooter.Īnother is just a run of the mill Savage. When he died, I made sure I took that one so that it would remain as is. It has definitely seen better days - lots of holster wear and the wood grips have a crack, but he made a comment to me one day before he died at how many times he had though of getting it re-blued, but couldn't bring himself to do it. I also have his old Smith & Wesson service revolver (.38) from when he was a police officer. Still functions perfectly, but the furniture is worn out and I just can't bring myself to replace it. It's pretty much retired now as it is definitely showing age and use. I would love to know how many rounds that gun has had run through it. Probably my favorite is my grandad's first gun and my first gun - a run of the mill Remington Model 11 Sportsman in 20 gauge.
